FILE - In this April 9, 2008 file photo Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito Jr. speaks at John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio. Still wonder exactly why Justice Samuel Alito shook his head and mouthed the words "not true" during President Barack Obama's State of the Union address? He objected to the president's saying the ruling reversed a century of law. The president touched off a controversy when he broke with tradition _ and decorum, his critics said _ by criticizing the court's recent campaign finance decision in his speech with six justices in attendance and bound by their own tradition of not reacting to what is said. The unrecognizable Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito is not a big enough deal for brunch.

He was turned away from Sunday brunch in New Haven, Conn. on a trip to Yale this weekend, according to law news site Above the Law.

Alito and his wife walked into Heirloom, the restaurant at The Study at Yale Hotel, and asked to be seated for brunch, but the hostess apparently told them the restaurant was completely booked.

According to the Above the Law tipster, Alito calmly left the restaurant without identifying himself. When asked, the hostess said she had no clue who he was.

“Well, he should have made a reservation. We get very busy for brunch,” she said after she was told the man was Justice Alito.

Alito was at Yale Law School, along with fellow alums Justice Clarence Thomas and Justice Sonia Sotomayor, for the Award of Merit ceremony.

  1. Why is this news? Because he didn’t drop his name and throw a “Do you know who I am” hissy fit?

  2. Slow news day?

  3. Too bad it wasn’t a lunch counter/s

    Who cares?

  4. Folks, folks, it’s on the site because it’s a little moment where a powerful person gets turned down like the rest of us might. Not a big deal, just a mildly amusing thing if you think it is.
