State Sen. Joni Ernst (R), who won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate in Iowa on Tuesday, posted and then quickly deleted a tweet saying U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Baghdahl and his family were in her “thoughts & prayers” in response to news that he had been freed.
Ernst published the tweet at 3:31 p.m. on May 31.
According to The Sunlight Foundation’s Politwoops the tweet was taken down after about 25 minutes.
Ernst is one of a number of Republicans who have seemed to shift their tone on Bergdahl since his release. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) for instance said in a recent interview with CNN that he would be inclined to support a prisoner swap if it resulted in Bergdahl’s release. He later seemed to shift on that position and said the “decision to bring Sgt. Bergdahl home — and we applaud that he is home — is ill-founded. It is a mistake.”
TPM has reached out to Ernst’s campaign and will update if we hear back.
