Jon Stewart broke out in laughter on Thursday’s edition of “The Daily Show” at news that President Obama would not be meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Obama told press that he was declining to meet with Netanyahu because “general policy” said U.S. leaders don’t meet with a foreign leader too close to that country’s election, lest it appear America is meddling in another country’s affairs.
“Yes!” Stewart exclaimed. “America doesn’t wanna meddle in a Middle Eastern nation’s domestic politics. I mean, we don’t do that!”
A map of the Middle East appeared onscreen.
“I mean, unless a country wanted to nationalize its own oil industry (Iran lit up), or looked likely to ally with a rival superpower (Egypt), or was fighting a proxy war with some other country we didn’t like (Iraq), or wouldn’t let us put military bases in their country (Saudi Arabia), or send prisoners to their country (Pakistan), or was next to a country we wanted to spy on (Turkey).”
“But aside from these very rare instances,” the host concluded. “We do not meddle in Middle Eastern nations.”
Stewart then groaned at a much-touted campaign ad by Netanyahu in which the prime minister appears at a couple’s home announcing he is their “Bibi-sitter.”
“Turns out Jews can’t be funny in every country,” Stewart said.
