Jon Stewart on Monday skewered the Internal Revenue Service over revelations that the agency improperly targeted conservative organizations, arguing that the emerging scandal will embolden right-wing conspiracy theorists.

Stewart blasted senior IRS official Lois Lerner, who seemed to suggest on a conference call last week that the agency’s apology was adequate.

“Wait a minute! I didn’t realize apologies were sufficient in IRS-related issues,” Stewart joked. He then poked fun at Lerner, who infamously confessed that she’s not proficient at math during the same conference call.

“That’s a good one, lady who works at the place that calculate people’s taxes,” Stewart said.

But “The Daily Show” host said that the scandal “shifted the burden of proof from the tin foil-behatted to the government, and may have cost President Barack Obama the credibility advantage he’s enjoyed over his foes.

“Well, congratulations, President Barack Obama, Conspiracy theorists who generally can survive in anaerobic environments have just had an algae bloom dropped on their fucking heads, thus removing the last arrow in your pro-governance quiver: skepticism about your opponents,” Stewart said.
