John Oliver dropped in from his show’s hiatus on Monday with a few tips on how make it to 2015 in one piece.

“New Year’s Eve is like the death of a pet,” the host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” said in a special online-only clip. “You know it’s going to happen, but somehow you’re never really prepared for how truly awful it is.”

“New Year’s Eve is the worst,” he added.

Oliver proceeded to issue some strategies for those looking to avoid the holiday blues.

“The best way to celebrate the spirit of New Years’ Eve is by lying,” he said, advising viewers to blow off their friends and family.

“If you do this right, you will be in bed on New Year’s Eve at 11:45 after watching all five ‘Die Hard’ movies,” he concluded.
