Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Monday ribbed Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) for asking the State Guard to monitor an upcoming U.S. military training exercise in the Lone Star state, The Dallas Morning News reported.

“I’m sure the people of Texas feel much more secure,” McCain said sarcastically, according to the newspaper.

McCain, who serves as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, joked that the military should leave Arizona alone too, according to the newspaper. Arizona and Texas are both among the seven states where the “Jade Helm 15” training exercise is supposed to take place this summer.

As for the conspiracy theorists who believe the training exercise is actually a cover for the implementation of martial law, the Arizona Republican said that’s just “bizarre.”

“We have been having military exercises in the southwest for a couple of hundred years,” he said, according to the newspaper.
