House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) issued a statement Tuesday calling Rep. Michael Grimm’s (R-NY) decision to resign from Congress after pleading guilty to tax evasion “honorable.”

“Rep. Grimm made the honorable decision to step down from his seat in Congress,” Boehner said. “I know it was made with the best interests of his constituents and the institution in mind, and I appreciate his years of service in the House.”

Grimm had initially refused to resign as he faced a 20-count felony indictment, but reportedly changed his mind after speaking with Boehner on Monday. His resignation is effective on Jan. 5.
