After months campaigning in nearly complete obscurity, former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore is getting out of the Republican presidential race, the Washington Examiner reported Friday.

Despite glimpses of Gilmentum, the former governor failed to find footing in the crowded GOP field.

He consistently polled near the bottom of the pack, and only got 12 votes in the Iowa caucuses and 133 votes in New Hampshire.

In a statement provided to the Examiner, Gilmore said his goal was to campaign on his experience as a governor.

“My goal was to focus on the importance of this election as a real turning point, and to emphasize the dangers of continuing on a road that will further undermine America’s economy and weaken our national security,” he said in the statement.
