In the Republican roar over Common Core, various myths are being peddled as fact. Even so, the 2016 GOP presidential prospects who are criticizing Common Core have a point _ if an overstated one _ when they dispute the notion that it is strictly a voluntary initiative that bubbled up from communities and states. In complicated but unmistakable ways, the federal government does put pressure on states to live up to the standards. (AP Photo/David Goldman, File) MORE LESS

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) has tried to shrug off a newly resurfaced voter registration form on which he listed himself as Hispanic.

The form was first reported on Monday by The New York Times.

Following The New York Times’ report, a tweet was sent from an unverified account claiming to belong to Jeb Bush Jr., which teased the likely presidential hopeful for the gaffe. Bush Sr. replied:

A spokeswoman for Bush failed to give an explanation for why he listed himself as Hispanic in the 2009 form from the Miami-Dade County Elections Department.

Bush is known for his ties to the Hispanic community. The former governor’s wife Columba was born in Mexico and he spent two years in Venezuela when he was in his twenties. Bush can also speak fluent Spanish and has advocated for immigration reform, despite strong opposition from the hard right wing of the GOP.

  2. Freudian slip? Ah, the Bushes. Always trying to be “real folks” and failing miserably.

  3. My goodness…the lengths some politicians will go to pander. Even risking voter fraud.

Wasn’t 2009 before the GOP Nutjobs threw their hissy-fit about securing the borders, and soon after unleashed the Kraken on all Latinos nationwide? I believe it was before they decided they didn’t need their vote anymore. Only all white Christians welcome in the fold now. Its kinda a litmus test thingy…you know, how much you can hate immigrants, especially those from south of the border. One could say, debasing Latinos in general has become one of their favorite national pastimes.

  4. Elizabeth Warren is more Cherokee than Jebbie is an Hispanic of any stripe. He’s so white he damned nearly glows in the dark.

  5. Ah…never misunderestimate them…the Bushie’s never fail to disappoint:

“There’s an old saying in Tennessee — I know it’s in Texas,
probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on
you. Fool me — you can’t get fooled again.”
