In a TV ad released Thursday, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate from Missouri shows off his Second Amendment bona fides by assembling an AR-15 rifle … while blindfolded.

In the ad, Jason Kander — a former Army captain in Afghanistan — talks about his respect for guns and his voting record. In the final seconds, he removes his blindfold and says: “I approve this message, because I’d like to see Senator Blunt do this.”

Kander, who served in the General Assembly before becoming Missouri’s secretary of state, is challenging Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO), who was endorsed by the NRA.

Last week, the NRA Political Victory Fund released a TV attacking Kander on guns. The noir-infused ad begins with an intruder breaking into a home and argues, “You have a right to protect your home with a firearm […] Jason Kander refused to defend your Second Amendment Rights in Jefferson City. How could you trust him in Washington?”

Kander’s campaign said via email that the ad is part of a statewide ad buy that began running Thursday. The campaign declined to provide a dollar amount of the ad buy.
