From decrying Newt Gingrich as “narcissistic” and “erratic” to spreading strange anecdotes about the former Speaker carrying a bucket to work, Mitt Romney’s surrogates are increasingly going after Gingrich’s basic mental functions.
I asked Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), who attended a Gingrich event in Jacksonville on Thursday as a Romney surrogate, what he thought of the recent focus on whether Gingrich was a little…off.
“He has demonstrated a propensity to come unhinged,” Chaffetz said. “He’s not reliable and it’s a character trait you need to look for in a president. It’s fair game and it scares a lot of people looking at him for the top of the ticket.”
