While Iowa State Rep.-elect Brian Meyer (D) was sitting in Applebee’s Wednesday evening watching the World Series when he got an unexpected call from Vice President Joe Biden.

“I was obviously surprised, and I didn’t think anyone was paying attention to a little special election in the middle of Iowa,” Meyer told The Huffington Post. “It was a pleasant surprise to hear from the vice president.”

Biden called to congratulate Meyer on winning his set representing Iowa’s House District 33. Asked why Meyer thought Biden called him, Biden laughed saying “Well it is Iowa.”

“I supported him in the 2008 caucuses, and I’ve always liked Joe Biden,” Meyer said. “I don’t know why he called other than to congratulate me and wish me well.”

The call will be another datapoint in speculation that Biden is planning to run for president again in 2016. He encouraged those rumors when he attended Sen. Tom Harkin’s (D-Iowa) annual steak fry in the coveted primary state.

Meyer and Biden did not discuss Biden’s possible 2016 run, Meyer said before adding that he hopes Biden runs again.

“I hope he does again, and I certainly will support him when he does,” Meyer said.

Meyer won the House District seat on Tuesday. It  was previously held by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (D). McCarthy resigned and took a position in Iowa’s attorney general’s office.
