Frank Sharry, director of pro-immigration group America’s Voice, said in a statement Tuesday that Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-KY) speech on immigration that morning was a significant boost for reform, especially given his close ties to the tea party movement.
“Rand Paul is a hot political property right now. So where does he spend his new-found political capital? On immigration reform,” Sharry said. “Following on the momentum of winning the CPAC Straw Poll and staging a filibuster that captured the nation’s attention, the Tea Party favorite chose to elevate his national profile by coming out strongly for a broad immigration overhaul. This speaks volumes about how far the debate on immigration reform and the GOP has come since the election.”
