In a paper released Wednesday in Kabul, entitled “I Had To Run Away,” Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported that hundreds of Afghan woman are imprisoned as a result of so-called “moral crimes” including cases of rape and fleeing domestic abuse. HRW claims that Hamid Karzai’s government has failed to bring Afghanistan into accordance with international law.

“It is shocking that 10 years after the overthrow of the Taliban, women and girls are still imprisoned for running away from domestic violence or forced marriage,” HRW Executive Director Kenneth Roth said.

HRW argues that the plight of Afghan women has been made worse by President Karzai.
