Conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, who recently said that Republicans should shake Donald Trump loose or else “get killed” in the general election, wrote in an op-ed published Wednesday that Republicans couldn’t “dump Trump” if they wanted to win in November.

“For the good of the country, Republicans have to be clear about the binary choice in front of us, close ranks around Trump and encourage him to eschew the frivolous and move ahead with a serious message,” Hewitt wrote in the Washington Post.

Hewitt said earlier this month that he wanted to support the Republican Party’s nominee, but that the best course of action would be to replace Trump.

“Because we’re going to get killed with this nominee,” Hewitt said at the time.

In his op-ed, Hewitt praised Trump’s Monday speech in which he suggested he’d expand his proposed ban on Muslim immigration to include persons from countries with a “history of terrorism.”

“Although there’s been talk in recent weeks of implementing new rules at the Republican convention in Cleveland that would allow party leaders to replace Trump — talk that I’ve entertained — the appetite for that sort of drastic measure is gone,” Hewitt wrote.
