House Republican leaders will discuss their set of “principles” for immigration reform with members on Thursday afternoon at their annual retreat, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said.
“We’re going to talk to our members today about the principles that the leadership team has put together,” he told reporters at the retreat in Cambridge, Maryland. He declined to reveal details: “We’re going to have the conversation today and I’m sure you’ll hear all about it.”
“This problem’s been around for at least the last 15 years. It’s been turned into a political football. I think it’s unfair,” Boehner said. “So I think it’s time to deal with it. But how we deal with it is going to be critically important.”
He reiterated House Republicans will do reform “in a common-sense, step by step manner” — in other words, they won’t take up the Senate-passed overhaul.
