Clinton Doubles Down: Sanders ‘Doesn’t Consider Himself To Be A Democrat’

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton doubled down Wednesday morning on the notion that Democratic presidential rival Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) isn’t really a Democrat.

“Well, I think he himself doesn’t consider himself to be a Democrat,” Clinton said in an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“Look, he’s raised a lot of important issues that the Democratic Party agrees with, income inequality, first and foremost,” she continued. “But it’s up to the Democratic primary voters to make that assessment.”

Clinton also said she’s “been in the trenches for a long time” and believes in electing “Democrats up and down the ticket.”

The remarks came just hours after Clinton floated the same concerns in a Politico podcast, noting he is a “relatively new Democrat.”

Both interviews came on the heels of Sanders’ primary win in Wisconsin Tuesday night, where the senator touted his wins in seven of the last eight Democratic primary contests.

  1. Well DUH!
He is NOT a Democrat. He may caucus with them in the Senate but he is an INDEPENDENT (who else would he caucus with? The FreeDumb Coalition?)
He has admitted that he is only running as a Democrat to USE the Democratic Machinery as he admitted he would fail miserably as an Independent.
Facts is Facts whether you want to hear them or not. (As Neil DeGrasse Tyson says: “Just because you “Don’t Believe It” doesn’t make is any less true.”)

  2. I think what she’s missing here is that not being a Democrat is now a possible asset, considering how far right Dems have shifted. Sanders represents the IDEAS of the Dems at their most progressive; the party has lost a lot of folks as it shifted right. More troubling to me is that total votes for the GOP in the Wisconsin primary outnumber total votes for the Dems. Does this bode ill for Dems taking Wisconsin in November?

  3. Well then, we can read instead of hear…

  4. Grrr!!! She’s making it harder and harder for me to say I’d vote for her in the ridiculously, laughably, unlikely event (the very mention of which is an attempt to suppress the Bernie Revolution Wave!) she won the nomination with comments like this. How dare she go on TV and say things that are literally true in order to try to persuade people to vote for her! Is there no end to her perfidy? Corporatist! Neoliberal!

  5. I’m not so sure fealty to party is as important to Democrats as it is to GOP’ers. I don’t care what Sanders calls himself or what others call him. His positions are clear and I find them hard to disagree with. I like Sec. Clinton too but I don’t get this bit from her? Who put her up to this?
