Republican Sen. Dean Heller, who is in a close race in Nevada, distanced himself Wednesday from the controversial comment by Richard Mourdock, the GOP nominee for Senate in Indiana.
Mourdock said at a debate the previous night that he opposed allowing abortion in cases of rape, saying that in those cases where a pregnancy occurred, “it is something that God intended to happen.”
“Dean Heller disagrees. He does not share these views,” Heller campaign spokeswoman Chandler Smith, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
In a press release Wednesday, Heller’s Democratic opponent Shelley Berkley hit back at Heller, saynig in part: “While Dean Heller may be forced to say the right things in an election year, his voting record clearly shows he shares the anti-woman agenda of Mitt Romney and Richard Mourdock, from restricting access to birth control, defunding Planned Parenthood, opposing equal pay for equal work and limiting mammograms and cervical cancer screenings.”
