Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) revealed on Thursday that his wife came up with his now-infamous line, “Republicans are addicted to Koch.”

“That’s the truth,” he told a small group of reporters in his Capitol Hill office. “Swear on my life.”

The Democratic leader initially hesitated when a reporter asked him who came up with the quote. “I shouldn’t tell them, should I?” he said, looking to his spokesman, who shrugged and gave his boss the thumbs up.

The reference is to the billionaire oil tycoons, Charles and David Koch, who donate heavily to Republican causes. Reid has been publicly attacking them in recent weeks and his quote has since become a Democratic rallying cry.
