Fox News host Harris Faulkner asked on Tuesday why guns should be regulated in the U.S. if “we’re not regulating the car.”
The comment took place during a discussion on the show “Outnumbered” about whether the U.S. should require universal background checks on gun purchases.
The show’s special guest Willie Robertson — star of A&E’s “Duck Dynasty” franchise and co-author of the book “American Hunter” — was the first to make the comparison between guns and cars. He brought up an incident that took place Saturday in Oklahoma in which a woman drove her car into a university homecoming parade, killing four people.
“God forbid she has mental illness and that’s why she just ran her car through,” Robertson said. “Are we taking away cars now? Because they can be just as le— Tons of people injured. There’s people killed. And so there is a major problem with mental illness.”
“Guns are regulated,” Robertson added. “If you buy a gun, believe me, you have to go through — it’s regulated.”
Julie Roginsky, the show’s sole liberal-leaning host, went on to call for for universal background checks. She said that gun owners were more likely to commit suicide or be involved in accidental shootings.
After some back-and-forth among the “Outnumbered” panelists, Falkner returned to Robertson’s point about cars, saying “more people have cars than have guns.”
“Are we going to take away everything that people use to kill each other?” Faulkner asked. “Because we’re really going to have to start with the basics, like vehicles.”
“Swimming pools!” co-host Andrea Tantaros interjected.
“This woman was drunk,” Roginsky said, presumably referring to the suspect in the Oklahoma crash. “We regulate people getting behind the wheel of a car when they’re drunk.”
“Yeah, but that’s a substance!” Falkner said. “We’re not regulating the car. We’re regulating the substance.”
Roginsky pressed her point that cars were heavily regulated while guns were not.
“I can’t give you a car without registering it, but I can give you a gun without registering it,” Roginsky said. “Come on.”
“It sounds like you’re not going to be happy until guns are revoked,” co-host Sandra Smith said.
