Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement about Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s death that Scalia was the “solid rock” on the high court, and said he would pray for a successor to champion his legacy.
Scalia was reportedly found dead at a resort in West Texas on Saturday afternoon.
Here’s the full statement from the governor:
Justice Antonin Scalia was a man of God, a patriot, and an unwavering defender of the written Constitution and the Rule of Law. He was the solid rock who turned away so many attempts to depart from and distort the Constitution. His fierce loyalty to the Constitution set an unmatched example, not just for judges and lawyers, but for all Americans. We mourn his passing, and we pray that his successor on the Supreme Court will take his place as a champion for the written Constitution and the Rule of Law. Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to his family, and we will keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
I’m scared Obama will not be able to get anyone past the GOP Senate. And if Trump or Cruz wins the GOP will likely keep the Senate, and their nominee will make Scalia look like a liberal.
From the Houston Chronicle:
Already trying to prime the voters to wait until after the election.
No GOP appointee could be any worse than Scalia. This is why we need to elect a Democrat.
That’s insane. Is there precedent for not confirming a Supreme Court judge within 11 months?
And I’m sure as soon as Congress holds a hearing on the President’s budget and votes on funding the war against ISIS, Pres Obama will play their “we won’t vote for any of your nominees” game through the end of 2016 so the American public won’t have forgotten what trash the GOP has turned into come 2018.
