Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon (D) on Saturday declared a state of emergency and instituted a curfew in Ferguson, Mo.

“If we’re going to have justice we must first have and maintain peace,” the governor said at a news conference in the town. “We cannot allow the ill will of the few to overwhelm the good will of the many,” he added.

Capt. Ronald Johnson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol said at the same news conference the curfew would extend from midnight Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday.
