Iowa Republican Senate candidate Mark Jacobs said the best way to connect with women is on an “emotional level.”
Jacobs made the comments during an interview with Iowa’s WHO-TV in Des Moines on Sunday.
“I think you have to connect with women on an emotional level,” Jacobs said. “And with a wife of 25 years and an 18-year-old daughter, I’ve had a lot of coaching on that.”
Jacobs’ comments came less than a week after news broke that the National Republican Congressional Committee met with aides of incumbent lawmakers to coach them on “messaging against women opponents,” according to Politico.
That meeting showed how top Republicans are taking extra steps to prevent a repeat of some of the more crippling gaffes Republicans went through in the 2012 election cycle, including Rep. Todd Akin’s (R-MO) comments that the female body can naturally shut down a pregnancy that resulted from “legitimate rape.” The comment was considered to be one of the major contributing factors that sunk Akin’s Senate campaign for Sen. Claire McCaskill’s (D-MO) Senate seat.
