Someone tell Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX) that Republicans in Texas are ready to back a liberal.
A poll conducted by Republican firm Wilson Perkins Allen Opinion Research and published by Politico on Friday showed Stockman trailing Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) by 44 points in the Texas GOP Senate primary. Fifty percent of GOP primary voters in the state said they’ll back Cornyn, compared with six percent who said they’ll support Stockman.
Stockman caught many off guard last week when he announced his intention to challenge Cornyn, the no. 2 Republican in the Senate. The congressman immediately branded Cornyn a “liberal” for opposing Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) forever-doomed campaign to defund Obamacare.
“Dear patriot, You are in a foxhole fighting to save our constitutional Republic… …and the last thing you need is a Republican bayonet in your back,” Stockman wrote in a fiery fundraising email last week. “But that’s what liberal John Cornyn has been doing to you every day.”
The email was par for the course for Stockman, who’s made a career out of saying some pretty wild things.
