Taking to its Google Plus social network, Google on Thursday pointed Web users to its Transparency Report website, which detected a sharp-drop off in traffic to Google sites from Syria, following what appears to be a countrywide outage in the country that began early Thursday morning. Google used the incident to promote its new “#FreeandOpen” campaign against proposed new U.N. Internet regulations. As Google’s post reads:

Internet access is currently completely cut off in Syria. This is why a#freeandopen Internet is so important. See traffic drop on our Transparency Report: http://goo.gl/YMxdM
