“I think you have to be realistic in your indignation,” said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney on the question of immigration. Gingrich was attacking Romney for being too strident on immigration — Romney has staked out a more right leaning position on the issue, arguing for a policy that would deport ilegal immigrants. But Gingrich disagreed, saying “I do believe that if there’s some level of humanity for people who have been here a long time.”
When moderater Wolf Biltzer asked if he was the “anti-immigrant candidate,” Romney said “The idea that I’m anti-immigrant is repulsive. You can say we disagree on policies. But to say that we should protect our borders, to welcome people here legally, to expand legal immigration…that proved I’m anti-immigrant?”
