Gay marriage advocates declared victory on Referendum 74 legalizing same-sex marriage in Washington on Wednesday, reports the Associated Press. Ballots are still trickling in in the vote-by-mail state, but supporters, who lead by more than 51 percent of the vote, say don’t believe their opponents can catch up.
If they’re right, marriage licenses can be issued to same-sex couples beginning Dec. 6 and, after a three-day waiting period, can become valid on Dec. 9.
Maine and Maryland approved same-sex marriage Tuesday while Minnesota voters defeated an anti-gay marriage amendment.
