Fifty-five percent of Americans believe the income taxes they paid this year were fair, according to findings from Gallup released on Monday.

It’s the lowest percentage of Americans to describe their taxes as fair since 2001, when Gallup first started testing the question. A huge majority of Democrats — 66 percent — said their taxes were fair, while Republicans were split: 49 percent said said their taxes were fair, while 48 percent said they were not fair. An ABC News/Washington Post poll last week showed Democrats overwhelmingly had a more favorable view of the federal income tax system and the IRS than Republicans.

The Gallup poll also showed that half of Americans believe their taxes are too high, up from the the record low of 46 percent from last year to say the same. Forty-five percent said their taxes this year were about right.
