Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords stands with her husband Mark Kelly (right), NASA astronaut and commander of mission STS-134, and mountain guide Vincent Lameyre (left), before Kelly and two other astronauts walk from L’Aiguille du Midi to the Refuge des Cosmiques near Mont-Blanc in Chamonix on July 23, 2012. The walk is made to unveil a milestone plate for the 100th anniversary of the discovery of cosmic rays by Victor Hess in 1912. The event also marks the 14th month anniversary of the installation of the cosmic ray detector on the International Space Station (ISS) by the astronauts during the last mission of the space shuttle Endeavour, code-named STS-134, when they flew the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) for the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) to the ISS.
