Baltimore city officials have reached a $6.4 million settlement with the family of Freddie Gray, whose death in police custody in April sparked months of protests against police abuse, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
Gray died of a “catastrophic” spinal cord injury days after being transported in a Baltimore police van handcuffed and without a seatbelt.
The settlement, which still requires final approval with the city’s budget committee, also requires all police begin wear body cameras, unnamed sources told The Post.
All six Baltimore police officers charged in Gray’s death were also indicted by a grand jury in May. According to police documents, Gray made eye contact with an officer and began running on April 12. He was arrested with a knife in his possession, but one Baltimore State Attorney Marilyn Mosby said was legal under Maryland state law.
