Former Gov. John Baldacci (D-ME) has joined the crowd of Democrats who have taken out nomination papers for possible campaigns for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat, the Portland Press-Herald reports.

Baldacci joins the state’s two current House members, Democrats Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree, who have begun signature-gathering efforts in case they decide to run.

The deadline for candidates to file, in the wake of Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe’s surprise announcement on Tuesday, is in only just over two weeks’ time, on March 15.
