Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson will resign from his position, effective March 15, the City of Ferguson announced on Wednesday.

“This was a mutual decision by both the Police Chief and the City’s administration,” the city wrote in a Wednesday statement.

Jackson will receive severance pay and health insurance for a year following his resignation. Lt. Col. Al Eickhoff will serve as interim police chief while the city searches for a replacement.

Jackson’s resignation follows a report issued last week by the Justice Department that alleged a pattern of racial bias and violations of constitutional rights by the Ferguson police department.

Numerous Ferguson officials have resigned in the wake of the DOJ report, including two police officers, the city manager, and a judge. The city of Ferguson has fired one official and is investigating two others over racist emails uncovered during the DOJ investigation.
