Former Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) wants to remain free on bail as he appeals his corruption conviction, the Associated Press reported Monday.

Renzi was sentenced in October to three years in prison on public corruption and other charges connected to a money-laundering scheme. He was covicted in June, but believes there’s a strong chance that his appeal will lead to a new trial or less severe conviction, according to the AP.

Renzi, who served in Congress from 2003 until 2009, is slated to begin his prison sentence in January.
