President Barack Obama’s proposed $100 million project to map the human brain has earned the blessing of one of his fiercest critics.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich on Tuesday applauded Obama for spearheading the so-called BRAIN Initiative.

“President Obama is taking a very important step toward the most dramatic breakthroughs in human health,” Gingrich said in a statement on his website. “Brain research is vital for Autism, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, Parkinson’s, traumatic brain injury, mental health, and a host of other concerns.”

He also expressed regret for not increasing the budget for the National Science Foundation while he was speaker, and reiterated that Obama “deserves credit for taking an important step in the right direction.”

Gingrich’s affinity for the sciences is well known. As a candidate for president last year, he famously pledged to build an American colony on the moon.
