Illinois' congressional delegation is grappling with whether to approve U.S. use of military might against Syria. Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin this week voted in a Senate committee in favor of a resolution authorizing military force but restricting it to 90 days and barring American ground troops from combat. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL), the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, said that Republicans have a decent chance of winning the Senate majority in 2014.

“We’re faced with a grim reality that more money is being spent earlier in some of these hot races than we’ve ever seen,” he said in an interview with the New York Times published Monday. “We’re spending some, but we can’t keep up with them.”

Durbin also indicated that Republican senators allowed a vote on a clean debt limit hike to save face ahead of the 2014 elections.

“They seem to want to be on their best behavior in an election year,” he said about the cloture vote.
