Guy Cecil, executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, said Monday that the committee is looking at several potential candidates to run against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in 2014, and has not settled on actress Ashley Judd.

“We think that there are actually a handful of quality candidates in Kentucky,” Cecil said on a conference call with reporters Monday, responding to a report that the DSCC was considering backing Alison Lundergan Grimes, the Kentucky secretary of state, over Judd. “There’s actually a relatively deep bench in a state like Kentucky, that those quality candidates would certainly include folks like the secretary of state, folks like Ashley Judd, there are others as well, and we are — we’re gonna be focused on making sure that we recruit and that ultimately a candidate runs that can take on Mitch McConnell and draw a very strong contrast, and in particular focus on his miserable record as a senator from Kentucky and certainly as minority leader.”

“This race will be a top priority for us,” Cecil said. “Mitch McConnell is one of the most unpopular senators in the country.”
