Donald Trump is projected to win in Virginia Tuesday night, asserting his dominance in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

CNN, CBS and Fox News called the race after a closer than expected battle in the state between Trump and Rubio.

Going into the election, the TPM PollTracker Average showed Trump at 37.3 percent, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) at 26.3 percent and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) at 16 percent.

On Tuesday, there was some effort to chip away at Trump’s dominance. Rep. Scott Rigell (R-VA) sent an open letter to Republicans Tuesday asking voters to support another candidate and saying that Trump would be “catastrophic” if he were the party’s nominee.

“I reject Trump as our nominee based on his judgment, temperament and character, all of which point to a reckless, embarrassing and ultimately dangerous presidency,” Rigell wrote.

Trump appeared at a rally in Virginia Monday where a photographer was taken down by one of Trump’s secret service agents. The rally also raised tensions when protesters began chanting from the audienced and Trump replied from the state “are you from Mexico?”
