A New York state lawmaker asked Gov. Andrew Cuomo Monday to rename the “Donald J. Trump State Park” after the Republican presidential candidate has “shown that he is untrustworthy of having a New York State Park named in his honor,” according to the letter BuzzFeed News obtained.
State Senator Daniel L. Squadron, who is a Democrat, wrote Cuomo that he is also introducing legislation to rename the park “with a more appropriate one.”
The park sits on 436 acres of land that Trump had planned to develop into a golf course. When those plans failed, though, he donated the property to the state in 2006, according to a New York Times article.
“Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign has been bigoted and destructive — the state should send a message that his rhetoric and proposals are contrary to New York’s values,” Squadron said in an email to TPM.
Trump’s campaign did not immediately return TPM’s request for comment.
