Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told CNN Wednesday that he and his Muslim friends agree that he’s “doing good for the Muslims.”

Trump, to much criticism, called Monday for a “a total and complete shutdown” on Muslims entering the United States.

But Trump has defended his comment and went so far as to say that he’s helping the Muslim community in an interview with CNN that is scheduled to air Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET.

“I’m doing good for the Muslims,” Trump reportedly told CNN. “Many Muslim friends of mine are in agreement with me.”

Trump was quoted as saying he loved the Middle East and the people there.

“I have many friends who are Muslims,” Trump said, according to CNN. “They’re phenomenal people. They are so happy at what I’m doing.”
