Democrats will call for the end of the death penalty at their national convention this month, according to a draft of the party platform released Friday. The proposal represents a win for supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who called for the abolishment of capital punishment during the Democratic primary. Presumptive Dem nominee Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, approves of a “very limited use” of the death penalty, particularly in “horrific” terrorist crimes, according to CNN.

A draft of the Democratic platform published by the Washington Post promises, “We will abolish the death penalty, which has proven to be a cruel and unusual form of punishment. It has no place in the United States of America.”

It also calls for a $15 minimum wage, another victory for those cheering the Sanders campaign’s focus on economic inequality.

  3. I’m not visiting CNN until they reveal Lewandowski’s bias, so I don’t know the full text of Mrs. Clinton’s comments.

I agree that capital punishment should not be part of the judicial system’s standard remedies for common crime. I also agree with Mrs. Clinton’s more nuanced take. I think the world is better off without Osama bin Laden around to directly, indirectly, or through rumor to affect current events.

  4. And they continue to placate Sanders with the party platform which wont matter much expect for letting the media talk about the differences between it and Clinton. But hey this is all about Sanders not actually about helping people raise the minimum wage or take out the death penalty.

  5. There will be a death penalty repeal measure on the California ballot this November. The Democratic Party is behind this measure as well as some prominent and, clearly, thoughtful individuals.

The measure would repeal the state death penalty and replace the maximum punishment for murder with life in prison without possibility of parole. It would apply retroactively to those already sentenced to death.
