Longtime white nationalist and former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke praised Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump last week, calling him “the best of the lot” who has said “some really great things recently.”

Duke, who is also a former Louisiana lawmaker, made the comments during his radio show last week. The comments were flagged by BuzzFeed on Tuesday.

“I praise the fact that he’s come out on the immigration issue,” Duke said on his program. “I’m beginning to get the idea that he’s a good salesman. That he’s an entrepreneur and he has a good sense of what people want to hear what they want to buy.”

Trump recently released his immigration plan, which includes building a wall between the United States and Mexico, deporting those living illegally in the country, and ending the right that automatically grants citizenship to those born in the U.S.

“And I think he realizes that his path to popularity toward power in the Republican Party is talking about the immigration issue. And he has really said some incredibly great things recently,” Duke said on his program. “So whatever his motivation, I don’t give a damn. I really like the fact that he’s speaking out on this greatest immediate threat to the American people.”

Duke said his thoughts on Trump have evolved. He described Trump as untrustworthy, but the “best of the lot.”

“I’ve said from the beginning I think his campaign is good in the sense that it’s bringing these issues to a discussion which we have to have in America,” Duke said. “And he’s continuing to move the envelope further and I think he understands the real sentiment of America.”

Duke most recently made headlines following revelations that House Majority Whip Steve Scalise spoke at an event for Duke’s white nationalist group in 2002.

    Mother effing racist that is!

  3. To many in the GOP’s base, this counts as a great character reference.

  4. Well, well well…full-throated endorsements from Palin and Duke. Pretty well sews up the nomination for me.

  5. Let’s just give Republicans Alaska…let them all move there. Plenty of room! Seriously, do we need Alaska? Is anyone against this?
