University of Oklahoma President David Boren said Monday afternoon that the school may take action against individual members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity over a video that allegedly shows them singing a racist chant.

Boren already severed the university’s ties to its SAE chapter in a statement Monday morning. But in a later press conference, Boren said the university was conducting an investigation into frat members’ individual behavior in addition to the actions of the chapter as a whole.

“Obviously, some of those who took leadership roles in orchestrating the chant, pushing forward the chant, engaging in this activity which clearly is harassing our community and disrupting our educational experience,” Boren said. “Under the civil rights law it may be possible for us to take action against certain individuals.”

Boren was emphatic about kicking the frat off campus to send a strong message that discrimination wouldn’t be tolerated at the school.

“As far as I’m concerned it won’t be back, at least not while I’m president of the university,” he said. “It’s not gonna come back.”
