Former presidential senior advisor David Axelrod touted the White House’s ethics record Monday, saying that “there hasn’t been a major scandal” since President Barack Obama assumed office in 2009, BuzzFeed reported Tuesday.
“I’m proud of the fact that basically you’ve had an administration that’s been in place for six years in which there hasn’t been a major scandal,” Axelrod said during a talk at the University of Chicago. “And I think that says a lot about the ethical strictures of this administration.”
Axelrod was responding to a question from an audience member about the “revolving door” between lobbyists and government.
“The rule is that there’s basically been a ban on such a revolving door,” Axelrod said, citing the “pretty strict strictures” that prevented him from taking new clients when he left his post as senior advisor in 2011.
Axelrod said the administration’s record might not be “pristine,” but that it was “light-years” ahead of previous administrations.
