Heidi Cruz addressed some important issues on the campaign trail Monday morning in Indiana, including what she thinks about jokes that her husband Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) is an infamous serial killer.
During a visit to a cafe in Carmel, Indiana, Yahoo! News asked Heidi Cruz what she thought about comedian Larry Wilmore’s jokes about the Texas senator being the Zodiac Killer. Cruz told Yahoo that having known the unpopular senator for so long, this type of joke at his expense doesn’t shake her.
“Well, I’ve been married to him for 15 years and I know pretty well who he is, so it doesn’t bother me at all. There’s a lot of garbage out there,” Cruz told Yahoo.
Her comments marked the Cruz campaign’s first response to the “Ted Cruz Is The Zodiac Killer” meme, which has floated around on the Internet for years and circulated widely during the 2016 race. It’s exceedingly unlikely that Cruz, who was born in 1970, is the same person who committed a string of unsolved murders beginning in the late 1960s.
Wilmore made several jokes about the popular meme Saturday during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, saying “recently, Ted Cruz got a string of wins and endorsements, then everybody remembered who Ted Cruz is, the Zodiac Killer.”
At least one person has been cashing in on the meme: TPM recently spoke with an activist in Texas selling “Ted Cruz was the Zodiac” t-shirts to help fund abortions in the state.

Well, she’s right about one thing–there is a lot of garbage out there. (And Ted’s fingerprints are on some of that garbage, if not the necks of murder victims.)
Face o’ God or Zodiac Killer… How does one tell the difference?
Classic deflection. It’s not Ted that’s the Zodiac killer, it’s Heidi! (Ominous musical score)
He’s probably not the Zodiac Killer, but Judge Crater IS buried in his basement.
These rumors about Ted do not trouble her at all – certainly not enough, say, to cause her to become impaired and wander a highway in the middle of the night in an altered state. That would require another level of concern altogether. Not like this.
