Republican presidential candidate Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) repeatedly refused to say in an interview aired Sunday whether he would support opponent Donald Trump if the businessman was ultimately the party’s nominee.

NBC News “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd asked Cruz multiple times if he would support Trump, and Cruz never gave him a straight answer.

After Cruz gave several scathing critiques of Trump, Todd asked Cruz, “If he’s the nominee, I take it you can’t support him anymore, can you?”

Cruz responded that if Trump was the nominee, the race would be lost to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

“But are you going to support him—” Todd began, before Cruz cut him off to repeat that Trump would lose to Clinton.

Todd again asked Cruz if he would tell his supporters to rally behind Trump. Cruz shot back that the “media would love for me to surrender to Donald Trump.”

“It’s about the numbers. He may win,” Todd replied. “Republican voters are the ones rejecting you, this is not a media conspiracy, Senator.”

The two continued to go back and forth on the subject before Todd wrapped it up.

“All right, so let the record show, you have not taken a position on whether Trump — whether you can support Trump if he’s the nominee. Fair enough?” Todd asked Cruz.

“And let the record show you tried very, very hard to get me to commit to supporting Trump,” Cruz replied.
