Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Tuesday asserted that a military confrontation with Iran would be “substantially more likely” if Chuck Hagel is confirmed as the next U.S. defense secretary.
“Because in my view, Chuck Hagel’s being confirmed will only encourage the nation of Iran to continue and accelerate its program to develop nuclear weapons capacity,” Cruz said at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing. “And if that occurs, the chances are far greater that our young men and women will be sent into harm’s way. I don’t want to see that happen, and I think encouraging those who would do harm to this country is not ultimately in the interests of this nation.”
