Freshman Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Friday slammed his fellow Republicans as “squishes” on gun control after his colleagues confronted him over his threat to filibuster any gun control legislation.

According to Cruz, who addressed a FreedomWorks’ summit in Texas, the gun control issue “generated more heat internally in the Republican conference” than any recent issue. Republicans attacked Cruz, who along with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Mike Lee (R-UT) pledged to filibuster new gun legislation, for putting them in a politically difficult situation.

“They said, ‘Listen, before you did this, the politics of it were great. The Dems were the bad guys, the Republicans were the good guys. Now we all look like a bunch of squishes,'” Cruz said.

“’Well, there is an alternative. You could just not be a bunch of squishes,” he said.

Cruz predicted that the gun issue fight is not over and that Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) will make a second push to pass gun legislation.
