Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) told a Charles City, Iowa audience on Friday night that his Democratic presidential opponent Hillary Clinton deserved a “spanking” for how she handled the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, according to the Washington Post.

Accusing Clinton of lying about the cause of the incident, Cruz said, “In my house, if my daughter Catherine, the five-year-old, says something she knows to be false, she gets a spanking. Well, in America, the voters have a way of administering a spanking.”

The Texas senator was responding to a question from an audience member about who would be held accountable for the attack on a U.S. compound that left four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, dead.

Cruz implied Clinton, who was secretary of state at the time, should bear responsibility, accusing her and President Barack Obama’s administration of “deception, obstruction and cover up.”

Clinton has repeatedly testified about the events leading up to and following the deadly attack before the House Special Committee on Benghazi, one of eight congressional committees devoted to investigating the attack.
