Late night host Stephen Colbert took the mic at the site of the GOP convention Sunday night to deliver a “Hunger Games”-style dig at Donald Trump.
The night before the convention kicked off in earnest, Colbert rushed onstage dressed as Caesar Flickerman, the emcee from “The Hunger Games” series, to make light of the event. Colbert had a running gag on “The Tonight Show” as this character where he paid homage to each Republican candidate as they dropped out of the primaries.
Clad in a blue wig, Colbert walked onstage and started his bit.
“(Trump) has formed an alliance with Indiana Governor Mike Pence,” Colbert said.
Colbert then bowed his head as if the mention of the vice presidential announcement had put him to sleep.
“Sorry, I blacked out there for a moment,” he said. “It is my honor to hereby launch and begin the 2016 Republican National Hungry for Power Games!”
A security guard then appeared to try to usher Colbert off stage, but not before the comedian delivered his final Trump dig.
“Look, I know I’m not supposed to be up here,” Colbert said, “But to be honest, neither is Donald Trump.”
Watch the gag below:
This man remains brilliant. He is the Stephen Hawking of comedic social commentary.
Now I’m wondering which delegate clapped.
This was his moment to be himself, more like his time at Comedy Central than CBS. He has seemed lately to be shedding some of his CBS stodginess, let us hope that this trend continues.
Brilliant!
Truthiness rules! Bigly…
Wow…he really did that! I though it was some CBS gag.
