Where many media types saw an epic flight response from Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), Stephen Colbert saw a golden marketing opportunity.
Paul was captured on video shaking hands with two immigration activists at a fundraiser Monday night in Iowa, then getting up from his table at his aide’s behest and leaving a half-eaten burger behind as Rep. Steve King (R-IA) stayed to talk with the activists. The Kentucky senator later claimed he wasn’t avoiding the activists and simply had to make another interview.
“Naturally, the lamestream media is accusing Rand of sidestepping a potentially damaging political confrontation, but that is wrong,” Colbert said on Wednesday’s “The Colbert Report.” “He was not sidestepping, he was away-running. And he did it for a very good reason. Presidential candidates have to stay in shape.”
The “Rand Paul-eo” diet consists of just “three easy steps to deregulating your waistline,” according to Colbert: have a burning desire to be President; eat whatever you want; then get “a Mexican” to interrupt your meal.

Colbert for President…
Rand Paul’s diet is a form of binge-purge. Binge on libertarian ideology, then purge any sense of shame as you hide from your actual positions when people call you out on them.
There is simply no way that Paul lasts in the republican primary. This is exactly the sort of thing he is prone to do (he abhors being confronted). I see him being the Rick Perry of this race…a completely bizarre footnote included merely for humor.
Rand Paul
Shook hands with 2 Dreamers…
Picked up his burger
Took a bite
Realized what he’d done
Ran to the bathroom to wash his hands.
Awesome–just perfect. Every Dem candidate in the nation should run this Colbert sequence constantly.
